LDAR - Leak Detection and Repair Study

Man wearing safety gear repairing a pipe. LDAR.

The LDAR (Leak Detection and Repair) program implements compliance with environmental regulations, restricting effluents released by certain chemicals into the environment. Many standards like Maximum Achievable Control Technology (MACT) standards, New Source Performance Standards (NSPS), National Emissions Standards for Hazardous Air Pollutants( NESHAP), and Central Pollution Control Board( CPCB ) require the monitoring of these fugitive emissions from process equipment.

Importance of LDAR in Emission Reduction

Leaking equipment, including valves pumps and connectors are a major source of VOCs and Volatile Hazardous Air Pollutants(VHAPs). The designers primarily targeted regulated entities such as petroleum refineries, pharmaceutical companies, and chemical manufacturing facilities, as well as compliance inspectors, when developing the Leak Detection and Repair Program. It discusses Method 21 requirements and provides guidance on leveraging various practices to improve the efficiency of an LDAR program. .

In addition to control fugitive emissions, LDAR Program also helps the industries to reduce unwanted losses of chemicals and thereby conserving energy & increasing their profitability.

Methodology of LDAR Studies

During the LDAR study, we adhere to the following methodology:

      • Identify the chemical streams requiring monitoring.

      • Determine which types of components (pumps, valves, connectors, etc.) to monitor.

      • Establish the frequency for monitoring.

      • Specify the actions to take upon detecting a leak.

      • Define the timeframe for repairing detected leaks.

      • Outline the actions to take if a leak cannot be repaired within guidelines.

      • Document the record-keeping and reporting requirements.
